Today Feb 4,2013, retail stores in Canada will no longer accept pennies. The Royal Canadian Mint stopped producing them and now will collect 82 million Kg. to melt down. They will make $$ on the meltdown as each penny costs more then a penny to produce.

There are lots of stories on the web re our penny, just google "Canadian Penny".

Retail stores are rounding down from 1,2,6,and 7 but rounding up from 3,4,8, and 9 for cash sales. All plastic transactions are still OK with the above figures. They have been some plastic screwups naturally.

We are just following Australia, New Zealand and France with the no more penny.

The same should apply to the U S as well. We don't need the penny any more. It is obsolete.

Is it that the Penny is obsolete or that we are to lazy to use them. Or perhaps it's that our children, who are now the cashiers, are to uneducated to count out change properly.

I for one will mourn the demise of the Penny.

The Penny was the very first currency of any type authorized by the US Government and for over two centuries, the penny's design has symbolized the spirit of the nation, from Liberty to Lincoln. The design for the first one-cent coin was suggested by Benjamin Franklin.
