I play a good deal of poker and the results have been good, but i made the same
mistake in the last two events. One cost me a few dollars the other a chance
at a lot of dollars.

I dont indicate these to show how poorly i played, but rather so no one else
makes the same brain dead mistake.

Event 1 i was in 4th place and blinds were $6000 and $3000, i was big blind and
small blind called. I had AJ and glanced over to see how many chips he lad left
and it appeared it was only $1500 so i just checked thinking he had so few he
was already pot committed. Well when i checked he lifted his hand and he had
$10,000 more. The flop came 9- 5 and his hand was 9 5 , i made a large bet and lost
and it hurt me alot at that point. I decent bet would have had him fold.

Sunday in a large event i was small blind and they were $800 and $400. I had 89 and
called the blind for $400 and watched the flop come 3 3 9 so i had two pair. I got
knocked out of the event on that had because the large blind had a 7 3.. Again a
decent bet would have had him fold the 7 3...

That part of my game is weak... i got to remember at all times to play it
or fold it.

In the 2nd scenario are you saying that you should have raised from the small blind with 89 off-suit?

well the smart thing would have been to do what i usual do in that situation and let him have it. But since i was not being smart i should have either raised or let him have it... check only allows a flop at no cost to him

I see your point, I would have folded that hand in tournament but maybe played it with a raise in a cash game. I don't think I want to risk falling into something that can cost me chips in a tournament situation.

your right, this was the largest dollar event our local casino has had and there were a number of new players, and i think there were several that play a number of events together as a team and split the winnings, they were very aggressive. We started with $10,000 and almost every hand cost you $1200 or $1600 to see the flop. I am very slow
player until i get to final table then i am more aggressive. I need to adjust my play some with these boys if i expect
to do as well as i have, not sure how to be more aggressive and still play my game.

I agree about the aggressiveness of the younger players, its a difficult adjustment. They three raise you with squadush. Hard to play them.

I played cash game last night.There were a couple of guys that were more aggressive. I played more of that type of game,
and concentrated on any sign of weakness in any caller, and it paid off big time. But it was only one night.
But i have to admit i felt like i was a little more in control, rather than just playing poker.
